The Hospital Midwife, a feature-length documentary, will follow nurse midwives, the doctors they work with, and their patients, in the DC area over the course of two years. The documentary will provide a personal glimpse into what midwives can bring into the birthing process in the hospital system. Through showing rather than telling, The Hospital Midwife will demonstrate how easily practices of midwifery could be mainstreamed into current medical practices to improve health care and costs of obstetrics care for all involved.

The recent documentary The Business of Being Born, produced by actress Ricki Lake, revealed the problematic nature of obstetric care in the United States. Although the documentary discussed briefly the role of midwives and demonstrates a market interest for such stories, the documentary was primarily informative and expose in format. The documentary focused on home births and made almost no mention of midwives who work in collaboration with doctors in the hospital system. What was missing was a deeper, observational-style investigation into the midwife-collaborative care model.
